"Home" "Sick"

The following conversation was real and happened to someone I know this week. Quite funny, read on (though names have been changed to protect the identity of persons involved):

John Doe calls a co-worker at the office.
"I am not coming in to work today. I am home sick."
Later on, the co-worker is asked by others at the office about John's whereabouts.
"Oh, yes. He's not here today, because he's home sick."

At that moment, it struck everyone. What was really being communicated there?
Now, truly, was John not at work because
(1) he was at home because he was sick (ill) and not fit to go to work? OR
(2) he was homesick, so he decided to stay home to treat his homesickness? : )

TGIF!

that's a very nice joke. I have all the reason to call in sick now!

I just caught a cold from a guest over the weekend, after a marathron run for the concert, plus I am really homesick!!!

When can I return to TO! I need to have my own car, my own "bed", and my family!!!!
